Lash extension adhesives do contain small amounts of toxins and less than cosmetic mascaras. A qualified Lash Artist will inform you about any risks that may arise from eyelash extension adhesive exposure.

The amount of adhesive applied is “tiny” compared to mascara. Unlike mascara which often directly contacts the skin, lash adhesive is applied to the upper lash only (single extensions) or the base of the upper lash (volume extensions) at a distance 1-2mm away from the eyelid.

The primary ingredient is cyanoacrylate (an acrylic resin that rapidly cures). Different medical grade cyanoacrylates are Octyl and Butyl Cyanoacrylates and dry slowly. Methyl or Ethyl Cyanoacrylates are more commonly used as they dry quickly and are strong. Eyelash extension adhesive is not suitable for people with acrylic allergy or sensitivity to tapes and adhesives.

Eyelash extension adhesives do contain “tiny amounts” of Formaldehydes (also known as DMDM hydantoin, diazuli dinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, or methenamine and quaternium-15). There is no “Formaldehyde free” eyelash adhesive on the market. Formaldehyde is not an ingredient but a by-product that is released once the adhesive is opened and used. Exposure to Formaldehyde is minimal and safe (FDA allowable amount is under 0.2% by weight used on the body not in the body). Exposure is for a very short period of time.

Formaldehyde is a colourless gas and produced by and found in many products, for example, cigarettes/tobacco products, gas cookers, open fires, antiseptics, medicines, cosmetics, dish-washing and washing liquids/cleaners. It’s used to preserve dried foods, Italian cheeses and fish. Combustion is a major source so Formaldehyde is in the air and abundant in densely populated cities.

Qualified Lash Artists fan the eyes or use a Nano-Mister to cure the adhesive prior to opening the eyes. This prevents Formaldehyde fume exposure.

Only about 5% of people will experience a reaction or sensitivity to eyelash extension adhesive. Most common allergies are to acrylic or latex. Acrylic allergy is almost instant with itchy, red and swollen with a “burn-like” appearance at the site of contact. Latex allergy is also itchy and red and may develop into hives or a rash. Any redness, swelling and itching of the eye renders someone sensitive.

It’s very important to keep eyelash extensions clean to prevent a condition called Blepharitis. Wash and clean eyelash extensions regularly and remove all makeup thoroughly. Specially formulated makeup removers and shampoos are available and prevention of Blepharitis is better than the cure.

Before you have your eyelash extensions make sure you ask your Lash Artist:

What type and brand of adhesive do you use?Can I have an allergy test prior to my lashes? What do you recommend if a sensitivity/reaction occurs? What products are available to keep my lashes healthy and clean?Do you provide after lash care instructions?

It’s better to make an informed decision about your eyelash extension artist and their products prior to attending to your eyelash extensions than to have regrets afterwards.

Written by Ruth Morgan

Owner/Operator Longa-Lashes

www.longalashes.com.au

14th October 2015

References:

http://cincovidas.com/eyelash-extensions-watch-out-for-formaldehyde/ Cited 13/09/2015

http://www.living-consciously.com/2013/11/eyelash-extensions-less-toxic-choice.html / Cited 13/09/2015

http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofile/tp111-cl.pdf / Cited 13/09/2015

“How To Apply Eyelash Extensions” Professional Training Manual by Christa McDearmon

http://minkilashes.org/formaldehyde-free-eyelash-extension-glue-reviews-fda-safe/ Cited 13/09/2015

The Toxic Truth About Mascara …

Many women improve their personal appearance by wearing mascara. A “Google Search” of recent articles uncovered some interesting insights into the toxins contained within the thick black smudge-filled fluid that we cake onto our lashes every day!

All reviews claimed that standard retail mascaras contain toxic chemicals of various types, combinations and amounts. Also, that mascara toxins can produce a variety of unsafe physical effects in and locally around the eyes as well as throughout the body.

Each eyelash is attached to a hair follicle just beneath the skin and extends out from the edge of the eye. A chemical toxin filled product applied directly onto the eyelash may easily enter the eye and also enter the body via absorption through the skin. Because there are skin pores, glands and tear ducts adjacent to they eyes, they are susceptible to becoming infected.

Here are the mascara ingredients that are listed as unsafe and toxic:

Aluminium Powder – is a cosmetic colour agent and neurotoxin (worse than mercury) that can cause damage to the cellular and metabolic nervous system as well as other cellular processes. It can impair the body’s ability to excrete mercury and therefore increase the effect of any mercury that is already present in the body.

Bacteria – mascara tubes are moist and dark with the addition of daily eye secretions that are transferred back into the tube via the mascara wand. Dr Krukowski (bustle.com) reported that the International Journal of Cosmetic Science found 79% of their sample mascara tubes were positive for staphylococcus bacteria. Another study reported mascara tube samples containing Staphylococcus or Streptococcus Fungi. To reduce the likelihood of infection, it is recommended that used mascara be discarded and replaced with new mascara every 3 months.

Coal Tar Dyes/Synthetic Colours – which are listed as FD&C or D&C followed by a colour name (red/green) and a number . These contain heavy metals that are carcinogenic and can be absorbed into the bloodstream via the skin.

Formaldehyde – which is also called DMDM hydantoin, diazuli dinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, or methenamine and quaternium-15 – can be (in sufficient quantities) carcinogenic.

Fragrances – are often added to cover up the smell of the coal tar dye. Fragrances can irritate the eye, cause mood swings, rashes, headaches and hormonal imbalances.

Lecithin – is an ingredient that can cause immune and respiratory toxicity as well as neurotoxicity.

Parabens (Butylparaben, Ethylparaben and Propylparaben) – can cause allergic reactions, skin rashes and contact dermatitis. Parabens absorbed via the skin can also disrupt the endocrine system by mimicking oestrogen. High concentrations of Parabens have been found to be present in breast cancer tumours.

Phthalates – are anti-androgens that can cause early puberty in girls and birth defects/deformities during pregnancy. Phthalates can also cause cancer that damages the kidneys, liver, lungs and reproductive system (Dr Krukowski, Bustle.com).

Polybutene, BHA, BHT – are tackifiers and plasticizers that are derived from petroleum.

ough natural versions may not offer the same cosmetic benefit in thickness or in length.

Petroleum based products can cause anaemia as well as damage kidneys, liver, lungs and reproductive system.

Propylene Glycol – while being deemed safe by the FDA can cause allergic contact dermatitis (a red inflamed rash characterized by itching or minor pain or in severe cases blisters). Propylene Glycol can also cause acne, eczema and respiratory issues.

Retinyl Acetate (Vitamin A Acetate) – can produce excessive oxygen reactive species that are responsible for causing gene mutations. Amounts of Retinyl Acetate has been restricted in cosmetic manufacturing and is presently prohibited and restricted in Canada.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – can cause allergic skin reactions, rashes, dermatitis and signals other chemicals to reactively create more carcinogens.

There are a range of natural mascaras on the market and many of these contain a lesser degree of toxins. Depending on the type and amount of toxins, some natural mascaras are safer to use than others, th

To discover whether your current brand of mascara is safe for you to use the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG’s) Skin Deep Cosmetics Database http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ may be worthwhile.

References:

Available URLs:

http://thenakedlabel.com/blog/2013/01/07/is-your-mascara-toxic/ Cited 12/09/2015

http://www.medicaldaily.com/4-common-mascara-ingredients-can-harm-your-health-safe-alternative-natural-mascara-253297 Cited 12/09/2015

http://makeup.allwomenstalk.com/harmful-ingredients-in-mascara-that-you-should-avoid Cited 12/09/2015

http://www.bustle.com/articles/56351-is-mascara-dangerous-i-talked-to-a-medical-expert-to-find-out Cited 12/09/2015

http://www.forbes.com/sites/melaniehaiken/2012/03/12/dangerous-beauty-top-5-contaminated-beauty-products/ Cited 12/09/2015

http://info.ecodivabeauty.com/blog/bid/404760/7-Key-Toxic-Ingredients-in-Mascara Cited 12/09/2015

http://www.womensforum.com/are-toxins-lurking-in-your-mascara.html Cited 12/09/2015

http://www.steadyhealth.com/articles/6-common-mascara-ingredients-that-might-be-dangerous-for-your-health Cited 12/09/2015

'Beautiful Eyes' ... 2D Volume Lashes ...

Now you can create more curl, length and double the number of eyelashes with 2D volume lashes. Haha!

How many years have you had eyelash extensions?

6

How often do you get them filled?

It depends on the person who does them, but anywhere between 10 days and three weeks.

What makes them worth it to you, time-wise, financially, and in general?

I never really wore that much makeup to begin with. So, it hasn't really cut my makeup routine in half or anything. Also, it’s an additional service; it isn't a necessary one. But what makes it worth it to me is that it is what I want, and I am happier knowing that I have an amazing full set of lashes. I get compliments on my lashes a lot, and that helps make it worth it to me.

How has having eyelash extensions changed you (confidence, beauty routine, etc.)?

I wake up and never have to worry about putting on makeup. Of course, if I go out, I may have to add some eyeliner and lip gloss, but I don't worry about having raccoon eyes with mascara or my eyelashes falling off with strips. It's definitely boosted my confidence with the fact alone that no matter what, I always have long, full eyelashes that make my eyes pop.

What's your favorite part about them?

I'm Chinese, and like most Asian girls, I want bigger eyes. I feel like the dramatic effect the eyelash extensions bring to my eyes makes my eyes always a focal point. I can wake up next to my guy and just bat my eyelashes knowing that I look good!

Have they changed your natural lashes? Have they had any negative impacts on your natural lashes, their growth pattern, etc.?

It really depends on who has done them. I've had some girls that did so many clusters that I lost chunks of my eyelashes and would pray, "Oh god, please let them grow back!" When I go to the right people, I don't notice anything negative.

Forever might be a strong word, but do you plan to have them indefinitely?

I'd like to. I mean, I don't know if I will be in my 60s really concerned with having long, luscious lashes every day. Haha! But, I see it for the next 10 to 15 years.

Do you recommend lashes to any beginners thinking about trying them?

I do, but I also recommend they find someone who is good and not try to get the best deal just to get them, because you will notice a difference, and the quality is what matters the most with this service.

STORY NO. 2

Name: Nicole Age: 47 How many years have you had eyelash extensions? 8+

How often do you get them filled?

Every 3-4 weeks. What makes them worth it to you, time-wise, financially, and just in general? They are so worth it to me because they look amazing all the time. You can just put on lip gloss and go if that's all you want or have the time to do. How has having eyelash extensions changed you (confidence, beauty routine, etc.)?

I feel like I look pretty all the time. They just open up your whole face; you smile with your eyes too, not just your mouth. I get so many compliments from people who say that my lashes are so beautiful, and they don't even know that they are extensions until I tell them.

What's your favorite part about them?

They are simple and easy. So pretty and look so natural, and you cannot see any clumps of glue or anything like that.

Have they changed your natural lashes? Have they had any negative impacts on your natural lashes, their growth pattern, etc.?

No. I think people always say that their lashes were so thin and short after they took them off, implying that the lash extensions did something to change their own lashes, but if you have been wearing extensions for some time, you may tend to think that your own natural lashes were that amazing, long, and thick when in fact they did not change and are still the same as before. Forever might be a strong word, but do you plan to have them indefinitely?

Oh yes!!! I love them! Do you recommend lashes to any beginners thinking about trying them?

Yes, I recommend going to a NovaLash-certified lash artist. Even if you don't plan on keeping them, giving them a try just may make you change your mind.

STORY NO. 3

Name: Sharifah

Age: 36

How many years have you had eyelash extensions?

On and off 10 years. Mostly on the past six years.

How often do you get them filled?

I try to get them filled every two weeks, three weeks tops. Having a full, lush set of lashes enhances my eyes so much that I try to stay on top of my fills. If I have an event or something special I am attending, I make sure to see Ari [Arianna Montazem] for a fill before. It is now on the checklist, such as getting a mani-pedi, a blowout, etc.

What makes them worth it to you, time-wise, financially, just in general?

How much the lashes enhance my eyes—and their natural beauty—makes them worth it to me. The lash extensions open my eyes up and make them look brighter and more awake. Also I save money on mascara and the whole process of curling my lashes. Another bonus is that I do not have to deal with the messiness of applying fake eyelashes or the potential disaster of a strip of lashes falling off during partying or any other fun activity.

How has having eyelash extensions changed you (confidence, beauty routine, etc.)?

It is funny to say aloud, but honestly they simply make me feel prettier. They have such a dramatic impact on a person’s eyes and face—the eyes are an important feature on any person. Plus having great eyelash extensions cuts down on time spent primping. If my eyes look bright and awake and great, I feel great and am 90% ready to head out.

What's your favorite part about them?

The way Ari frames them around my eye and blends them with my own lashes creates a very natural look. It is like having the eyelashes you wish you were born with in real life every day. Also, I like their permanence—they survive many showers, swimming, etc. And I really love not needing mascara and not having to remove mascara at the end of the day.

Have they changed your natural lashes? Have they had any negative impacts on your natural lashes, their growth pattern, etc.?

It has been so long that I have had them; it is hard to tell.

Forever might be a strong word, but do you plan to have them indefinitely?

For now I plan to have them and could not imagine not having them.

Do you recommend lashes to any beginners thinking about trying them?

I would recommend them, but it depends a lot on the person applying them. I recommend that a person does a lot of research about the technician who will apply them before getting it done. Eyelash extensions are not something a person should have done on a whim in the back of a nail salon—definitely research and get referrals and go to a professional.

STORY NO. 4

Name: Megan A. Schaeffer

Age: 27

How many years have you had eyelash extensions?

7

How often do you get them filled?

Every two to three weeks.

What makes them worth it to you, time-wise, financially, and just in general?

I don't have to wear any eye makeup on a daily basis, and I love waking up feeling beautiful. I'm also very active, and I love that I can work out and sweat and I don't ever need mascara again!

How has having eyelash extensions changed you (confidence, beauty routine, etc.)?

It has made me feel more comfortable to be without makeup and feel natural on a daily basis. Every where I go, I get compliments on my eyes and lashes, even when I'm in sweatpants and have no makeup on. It makes me feel really good.

What's your favorite part about them?

I love having that "kitten look" to my eyes. They create a dark, plush lash line that is really sexy, but I also feel natural at the same time. I love that they don't look like strip lashes, and no one can ever tell that they're fake!

Have they changed your natural lashes? Have they had any negative impacts on your natural lashes, their growth pattern, etc.?

No, I still have many natural lashes and am able to get the extensions super full. [Editor’s note: Lash extensions are applied to your existing natural lashes, so without your own lashes, they could not be applied.]

Forever might be a strong word, but do you plan to have them indefinitely?

Yes!

Do you recommend lashes to any beginners thinking about trying them?

Yes! I recommend them to anyone and everyone of all ages! It's the best thing ever! Forever addicte

TIPS FROM A LASH ARTIST

Interested in lash extensions or currently have them? We got tips from certified lash expert Arianna Montazem for keeping your lashes healthy and intact:

1. Make sure to brush through them after you wash your face/shower. Brushing them is key to keeping them from tangling and getting stuck together.

2. Don't be afraid to get them wet. Depending on what type of glue your artist uses (I personally use NovaLash, which is waterproof), you can get your lashes wet. Getting them wet also helps to keep them clean!

3. Avoid rubbing and tugging on the lashes. This is definitely one of the hardest ones, coming from someone who is constantly rubbing her eyes. I like to keep allergy eye drops with me to relieve any itchiness I may feel.

4. Avoid sleeping on your face, and use a silk or satin pillowcase. Sleeping on your face will definitely affect the length of time your lashes stay on, and a traditional cotton pillowcase can cause the lashes to get caught, inducing more wear and tear. So switch to silk or satin pillowcases (they're better for your hair and skin, too!),

Article Link: http://www.byrdie.com/lash-extension-tips/

'6 Eyelash Extension Myths to Stop Believing Now'...

There are a lot of 'myths' out there about eyelash extensions and it pays to go to a fully qualified & professional 'lash artist'.
